December 9, 2011 Food 4 Less Update

UFCW Food4less members from seven Southern California local unions voted yesterday to authorize a strike and to back union leadership as it negotiates with Food4Less.  According to Fortune magazine, Kroger, the parent company of Food4Less and Ralphs ranks as the 25th largest company in the country. Food4Less is it's most profitable division.

Following in the footsteps of tens of thousands of Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons workers, an overwhelming majority of Food4Less workers have indicated they will strike unless Food4Less proposes a wage and benefit package that fairly reflects their contributions to the company.

Kroger has the ability to provide its Food4Less members a fair wage and improved benefit package. Currently, the wage disparity between Food4Less and Ralphs can be much a $3 per hour.

Food4Less has deliberately stalled talks as part of an overall strategy designed to weaken union resolve.  UFCW members at Ralphs stuck together and ended up with a contract that shows them respect. Food4less members are going to do the same.

Face-to-face bargaining between the parties is scheduled to resume later this month. Union negotiators say they will use the strike vote by the members as evidence that workers are informed and angry about the company’s proposals and are willing to fight for their fair share.

December 7, 2011 Food 4 Less Update

Food4Less is Kroger's most profitable division. Yet they want to treat their workers like second class citizens. Food4Less proposes lower wages for the same work, They also want to eliminate higher paid meatcutter jobs and outsource them to lower paid nonunion outside vendors. This is not fair!

October 19 - Food 4 Less Negotiations Update

We appreciate all the completed contract questionnaires that were sent back. We are in the process of tabulating the results and analyzing your comments. We know that your medical benefits and wages are the most important issues. Receiving enough weekly hours as well as respect on the job were also frequently mentioned as key concerns.

We have signed an extension agreement with Food 4 Less. This means that all provisions of your contract which expired June 5, 2011 continue in full force and effect until either party (the Union or the Company) provides the other side with 72 hour notice of cancellation. We signed this because of the unusually long and drawn out negotiations with the 3 supermarket chains; Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons.
