A major labor dispute could soon have thousands of grocery workers hitting the pavement, and also make families across the Tri-Counties change the way they shop for food.
62,000 grocery workers say they are prepared to go on strike. Labor leaders say Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons collectively made more than $5 billion dollars in profits in 2010, but still want to force the average grocery worker who makes $25,000 a year to pay an additional $7000 a year for health benefit.
Contract negations have been going on for 4 months to no avail. Grocery workers voted last week to green-light striking if need be.
Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo AFL-CIO unions are pledging their support to grocery workers and families preparing to strike across Southern California.
The last strike started in 2003 and carried into 2004 and cost Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons about $2 billion dollars.
