Cure CVS
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―Protesters marched outside a CVS Pharmacy in Lincoln Heights Tuesday, alleging the chain unfairly keeps condoms under lock-and-key in stores located in minority areas.
Community activists say the practice of keeping condoms locked up – forcing would-be purchasers to ask store personnel for access – stigmatizes condom use.
But CVS officials say while some products targeted by shoplifters are kept under lock-and-key, there is a selection of condoms unlocked and available for purchase without help from store employees.
Protestors insisted that condom lockups occur disproportionately in CVS stores located in areas with higher minority populations.
In a statement, CVS officials allege that a union coalition is actually behind the protest, threatening to disparage the company unless they agree to waive employees' right to vote in confidential union elections.
