UFCW Decries Cannabis Tax Freeze Exclusion from CA Budget

News| July 1, 2025

UFCW has been fighting hard all year to prevent the state from raising the cannabis excise tax to 19%. We know this increase will only allow illicit cannabis operators to flourish while harming the legal industry. 2025 has been a tough year budget-wise. The state has a deficit, and revenues donโ€™t look promising. This budget outlook, plus having many organizations not support our push, led to us being unsuccessful in including a freeze in this yearโ€™s state budget. However, we have been moving a bill through the legislative process (AB 564) to freeze the rate at 15%. This bill is our highest priority to give the industry a fighting chance, so keep an eye out for how you can get involved and help make this bill law in California.
